PANEL REFUSES TO CHANGE PIT BULL RULES

NEWARK — Although one resident had asked Newark City Council to remove language creating restrictions on pit bull owners, the Safety Committee declined to make any changes Monday.

Michael Milewsky wanted the legislation to remove the reference to pit bulls and instead only impose regulations on dogs that had been proved vicious. Because pit bulls aren’t a specific breed, the legislation simply imposed regulations based on how a dog looks, Milewsky said.

But even if Newark changed the regulations, Ohio law already imposes the same requirements, which are insurance for pit bull owners, a limit on the number of vicious dogs per home, minimum areas of containment and a muzzle when walking the dogs.

Law Director Doug Sassen said the Ohio Supreme Court ruled the requirements were constitutional in 2007.
