Hector Aims to Show the Softer Side of Pit Bulls
by KYW's Jim Melwert
A high-profile dog was among those hoping to dispel myths about aggressive dogs, while promoting responsible pet ownership, Monday night.
Hector isn't much of a speaker, but he will sit, roll over, and give high fives. He was one of Michael Vick's dogs, but was rescued by Animal Farm Foundation. His owner, Roo Yori, says the scars up and down his chest show the life he used to live:
"Those scars were all external, and he didn't have any internal scars, so to speak, and he's just a really good, fun-loving, well-rounded dog who just loves life."
Hector (at right, in the arms of his owner) was the perfect mascot for a presentation at Drexel University aimed at ending what organizers call myths about specific breeds, especially pit bull type dogs.
Citizens for a No Kill Philadelphia president Garrett Elwood says Hector shows the owner makes the dog:
"He's able to be his normal, loving self. But if you put an animal in an abusive environment where they might be chained up outside for long periods of time and starved, and neglected, bad things are going to happen."
