Chance, one of the neglected dogs rescued from a Westport proptery, has made great strides in his condition, thanks to workers at the Forever Paws animal shelter.

Chance was not kind to Chance the dog, but his last chance was his best.

Found emaciated and covered with sores at a Westport “farm” off American Legion Highway this month, Chance had been left tied up, insufficiently watered and fed, never petted or walked.

“He was surrendered to Westport Animal Control,” said Karen Concepcion of Fall River’s Forever Paws Animal Shelter on Lynwood Street.

At Forever Paws, Chance got his chance and now, fed up to fighting weight, doctored and petted, he’s on a poster urging people to adopt an animal or donate to the shelter.

The picture in the top lefthand corner of the poster shows Chance as he was, tied up, every rib visible, head slung low, eyes full of pain.

The other pictures on the poster show Chance well fed, tongue lolling out in a smile, glossy-coated and barrel-chested.

“We put a lot of medical attention into him,” Concepcion said. “He had a skin condition, he had worms, he had infected ears.

“And he had an abscess in his mouth,” Concepcion said. “It was swollen. They had to put a drain in that.

“Because of not being fed, his immune system wasn’t up to par,” Concepcion said.

Chance is still in the process of being wormed and it will be a couple of weeks before he’s strong enough for neutering but he’s a much happier dog, crashing up against the chain link of his cage to lick a visitor’s hands, begging for a dog biscuit.

“When we first got him he laid down a lot,” Concepcion said. “He was weak. But when he saw people, he was friendly.”

Concepcion said Chance appears to be an American bulldog, about 2 years old.

At first, Chance was fed four times a day, small portions, since he wasn’t used to eating and then, looking healthier, he posed for the poster.

“It’s just to let the public know what can happen,” Concepcion said.

“We took six dogs from Westport,” Concepcion said.

One, Sheba, a dog of uncertain ancestry, has already been adopted.

Another, A Scottish terrier, went to a rescue group specializing in that breed.

“She was running free for six months,” Concepcion said of the Scottish Terrier. “She was feral.”
Chance isn’t quite ready for adoption yet but, as always, Forever Paws has plenty of animals waiting for a home.

“If anyone wants to come down and look at him, they are more than welcome,” Concepcion said.

Unaware that he is featured on a poster designed to help all animals, Chance was lying down, head between his front paws, teeth cracking a dog biscuit, thankful for this last chance.

GALENA — A Lampe man will be arraigned next week in a Stone County courtroom on felony dog fighting charges.

Jon Stingley, 42, was charged two months ago after authorities seized 15 dogs from a residence located at 3760 State Highway 13. Records show that Stingley resides at the address.

Another man, Keith Owens, 41, of Berryville, Ark., was also charged in the case after an investigation was launched eight months ago by the Stone County Sheriff’s Department.

Both men face six counts of felony dog fighting in the case, according to court records.

Police say the dogs were attached to heavy logging chains with thick collars and documentation was also seized that dog fighting took place.

The seven adult pit bulls and eight puppies were eventually taken to the Humane Society of Missouri in St. Louis for triage and care.

Both men were released from the Stone County Jail after posting bond, but court records show that Owens is incarcerated in the Carroll County Jail in Arkansas. He’s due back in court later this month on Sept. 21 in the case.

Stingley is slated to appear before Circuit Judge Alan Blankenship at 11 a.m. Sept. 7.

Each charge of dog fighting is a class D felony, which carries up to four years in the Missouri Department of Corrections if convicted.
Thursday, September 02, 2010

KINGS COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- Investigators in Kings County have busted a large dog fighting ring. Wednesday, they confiscated 12 Pit Bull Terriers at a home on Omaha Avenue in Corcoran. Thursday morning, they arrested 54-year-old Corcoran prison employee Meschelle Lindsey.

Kings County Animal Services first contacted Lindsey two years ago ... over concerns he did not have adequate shelter for two Pit Bulls he owned at the time. But after a tip came in just this week ... animal services visited Lindsey again and found some incriminating evidence.

Kings County investigators say the 12 Pit Bull Terriers they are nursing back to health are the same animals shown fighting in a confiscated picture ... one of many pieces of evidence detectives found at this Corcoran home.

Kings county sheriff Chris Jordan said, "The suspect had an unusual amount of veterinary type medical supplies for helping to heal injured animals. He also had materials, books that dealt with dog fighting."

The suspect, Meschelle Lindsey was taken into custody Thursday at Corcoran State Prison, where he works as a medical staffer. News of his arrest has outraged animal lovers ... including neighbors who say they had no idea what was going on next door.

Rosalia Saldana said, "What if the dogs get loose and my kids are out here. They can attack. Those dogs are very violent if they're not taken care of."

The 12 dogs are being cared for at Kings County Animal Services. But, one group likely to step in is Fresno based Bully Rescue. The non-profit organization takes care of Pit Bulls that have been abandoned or abused. Kings County detectives have already contacted them asking for help.

Becky Holly said, "They want us to go down and assess the dogs to see if they could be a member of a family one day. That's what you really need to do when you get into a dog fighting situation."

For now, rescuers say, although the dogs are scarred and hungry ... they all seem to be social and in good health. Still, experts advice, reversing what they've already been taught ... will take some time.

"It's all about the owner behind the dog. They're a powerful breed, but they're also loving and loyal and that's how they're able to be manipulated," adds Holly.

Bully Rescue employees say if they have room, they will likely transport some of the dogs to their Fresno headquarters.

As for Lindsey ... he faces felony charges. And investigators believe there may be more people involved. If you have any information, contact the Kings County Sheriff's Office.

UT - Animal advocates disturbed by growing ear-cropping trend

SALT LAKE CITY -- A disturbing and painful trend has surfaced at a local animal shelter, and officials say it's cause for concern.

Several pit bull-type dogs have become victims of home ear cropping. Experts say it's a procedure that when done at home is cruel and punishable by law.

At least five dogs have shown up at Salt Lake County Animal Services over the past few months, and each of them have had their ears cut off. Some were done with scissors, while on others, the severe wounds made it difficult to tell what tool was used.

Phoenix, a 4-month-old pit bull mix, was one of those dogs.
"For someone to be performing this in a backyard or in a back room of a house or basement and holding the dog down without anesthesia is animal cruelty." -Sgt. Zach Todd

"When he arrived, his ears had been brutally scissored off of his head," says Melissa Lipani with Best Friends Animal Society.

When Phoenix arrived at Salt Lake Animal Services about a week ago, his ears were swollen, bloody and infected -- all common signs of home ear cropping.

"It's a very disturbing trend that were seeing, especially when a dog like Phoenix comes in at such a young age and in such pain," says Lipani. "It's something that we're concerned about."

Home ear cropping is a painful practice that is done without anesthesia, antibiotics or post-operative medication. It's often done with scissors, razor blades or other sharp objects.

"It's very excruciating for these dogs to endure this type of procedure that is not done under any anesthesia or sterile procedure or pain control or anything like that," Lipani says.

Ear cropping is often done to make pit bull-type dogs look tougher or to prevent their ears from being ripped off in a fight. The procedure is legal when done by a licensed veterinarian, but illegal when done at home.

"For someone to be performing this in a backyard or in a back room of a house or basement and holding the dog down without anesthesia is animal cruelty," says Sgt. Zach Todd with Salt Lake County Animal Services.

Todd says if anyone is caught performing home ear cropping, they'll face charges ranging from a class B misdemeanor to a felony. He also says if they can tie the cropping to animal fighting, the punishment could be even worse.

"If the cropping on the ear is related to dog fighting and that connection can be made, felony charges could also be related to dog fighting," Todd says.

Animal advocates and law enforcement want to put a stop to this ear-cropping trend right away. They ask anyone who might witness it happening to call their local police department.

Remember Nico, the defeated deaf white Dogo Argentino at South Los Angeles animal shelter -- who moved so many people with the sad photo of him first posted on Facebook? Nico, the forlorn animal who evoked the agony and utter defeat so many discarded animals must experience? Well, it's a joy to update you on Nico's life.

Just look at these two photos side by side: Can this possibly be the same animal?

Photos like the one on the left aren't anything new on the Web: Tens of thousands flood Facebook alone on a daily basis. What was different about Nico's photo, though, was what it captured: the loneliness of an animal that lay against the shelter's wall full of sadness, seeming to have lost all hope. That only spurred on Southern California rescuers.

And that's where the photo on the right comes in.

Things have worked out well for Nico SwanGarris. That's his new name and he lives now with his two moms and new sister, Brisby, a pit bull mix who is also deaf and white, in Indiana. He still loves balls, baths and life as a major couch potato, says Bridget Swan, who, with her partner Melissa, adopted Nico in November 2009.

Last August, Southern California animal rescuer Nikki Audet first posted Nico's photo on Facebook, and Kelley Gibson, a rescuer and animal transporter based in a San Diego, helped get him to the Hamilton County Humane Society in Indianapolis. Nico likely didn't know how lucky a hand he'd been dealt.

He quickly went through training to help him with issues resulting from his deafness and teach him how to navigate in a world of sound. His bumps and nicks and battle scars were attended to. He was happy and safe when Bridget and Melissa decided they wanted to adopt a dog, and Bridget's friend said she should see this dog at the local humane society.

Swan remembers that, at first, the animal agency was a bit wary of her adopting Nico. She didn't understand why until she was clued in by shelter staff that Nico was a bit of a celebrity and they wanted to make sure she was adopting him for the right reasons.

These days Nico walks in parades with his new moms, “loves to sit up close on your feet so he knows when you are walking away,” says Swan, and “in general is 100% low-key. He'll get a wild hair in him once in a while, but he's a mellow guy, and he deserves it after all he went through back then. He just loves people -- despite whatever was done to him -- and gives lots of kisses. He's very generous and free with his kisses. He's just so dependent on us, and he likes to hang with you 24/7.”
>
Nico has had one setback: A cancerous tumor was discovered and removed shortly after his adoption. Recently, Swan and Garris learned that the cancer has returned, but they remain optimistic about his future. "We are attempting a holistic approach so that we can hopefully avoid an ear amputation," Swan says. "We know that he will beat this just like all the other terrible things he has put up with in the past. He is a loving fighter and is strong."

According to Swan, finding toys for Nico can be a bit of a problem, as he loves and chews up Kongs, bones and anything he can wrap his canines around. He also has hundreds of fans on Facebook who hear about his daily happenings and send him messages of love and support.

Asked what Nico might say now that he's safe and sound, Swan replies: “The main message is this: Just because it's a cute small dog or puppy doesn't mean it'll be your best companion. Go for the downtrodden, defeated dogs, look at the underdog, because they will give you all their love and gratitude and forever be grateful you literally saved their life.”

So this soulful, special dog, once full of sadness, now lives out the good life in the Midwest. It's the happy story ending all dog rescuers wish for but often don't always see -- though every animals deserve nothing less. We're wishing Nico a happy, healthy and cancer-free future!

Police say it was one of the most elaborate dog fighting rings they've ever come across.

Police say it was one of the most elaborate dog fighting rings they've ever come across.
Adam Garrett, Animal Care and Control

Indianapolis - Saved from a dog fighting ring only to be put to death - that's what happened to some of the pit bulls police confiscated earlier this month when they broke up a dog fighting ring on the city's west side.

It was a death sentence Friday morning for five pit bulls at Animal Care and Control of Indianapolis.

"They had to pay the ultimate price," said Adam Garrett, Animal Care and Control. "It's never easy. Our staff doesn't enjoy doing it. Nobody wanted to go back there and do that."

Investigators seized nine pit bulls earlier this month from a west side home where police say they busted one of the most elaborate dog fighting rings they've ever seen. Twenty-three people were arrested in connection with the case.

Four of the nine pit bulls weren't euthanized but they're not even at Animal Control anymore. They've been sent to rescues and other shelters to be rehabilitated and possibly adopted out.

"It's our hope to help as many of these guys as we can," said Garrett.

Dog Trainer and Behavioral Specialist Fernando Pastran hoped to rehabilitate the pit bulls, even the worst ones. He's offered to try. Pastron has worked with hundreds of animals, some involved in dog fighting.

"It's the only crime when the victim gets killed after the case is closed," he said.

Pastran is troubled five of the dogs were already euthanized, believing they all could have been saved and given a chance at rehabilitation.

"If that for some reason didn't work then we had to euthanize the dog, but at least we tried, you know?" he said.

But Animal Care and Control of Indianapolis says they didn't have a choice.

"They just weren't dogs that we felt comfortable releasing back out into the community," said Garrett.

No choice - just like the dogs who were part of the fighting ring and ended up dead because of it.

The Wood family thinks they know how you took Titan.
They think you first spied the 5-month-old puppy playing out front of their Lancaster Township home.

They think you waited until they went to work Wednesday.
Then they think you went around to the back of their home where Titan was attached to a dog line, unsnapped him and took him.
A short time later, somebody thought they saw you walking the dog through the Woods' Hawthorne Ridge neighborhood, off New Danville Pike. Later Wednesday, somebody else thought they saw you with the dog on Manor Street in Lancaster.
Josh Wood, 32, is looking for you.
Wood's son, who will turn 3 Friday, can't understand what happened to his puppy. He regularly goes outside and calls Titan's name from the back porch where the dog liked to lie.
Wood's wife, Febes, has cried over the loss of the dog who was, Wood said, "the friendliest, calmest dog I ever met in my life."
"It's horrible," Wood said. "We feel horrible."
The Woods, who live in the 200 block of Kentshire Drive and also have a 1-year-old daughter, bought Titan about three months ago, paying $800 for the dog, which is a purebred, blue, pit bull.
"I have owned them before," Wood said of the breed. "They're good family dogs, who have gotten a bad rap."
Wood and his wife keep the dog outside during the day if the weather is nice. They have a deck and a shaded area. Wood comes home from his job as a real estate salesman at lunchtime to feed the dog.
But when he came home Wednesday, Titan was not there. Thinking his wife had put the dog inside, fearing rain, he checked Titan's crate in the house. The dog wasn't there either.
During the day, Titan isn't visible from the family's front yard and he's not a barker. He also is not an escaper. His line broke recently and the puppy waited on the deck for a family member to find him. And Wood replaced the line with one suitable for a 200-pound dog.
That's why Wood thinks someone had seen the dog, and went looking for him.
"I think someone was watching us," he said "They had to know he was there."
Since the theft, which is being investigated by Manheim Township Police, Wood has posted messages about it on Facebook. He also posted fliers around his neighborhood and on Manor Street, where a family friend thought he saw the dog.
"I can't believe someone would do this," Wood said. "I know the dogs are valuable and he's not fixed. Someone could steal him and breed him and sell the pups.
"It's tough but I know a lot of people, all around, and I have everyone looking."
Titan is bluish-gray and weighs about 40 pounds. He has a white stomach and a white patch of fur on his front, right paw.
Anyone with information about the dog is asked to call Manheim Township Police at 569-6401.

Two pit bulls accused of running at Elgin, Ill., Mayor Ed Schock have been labeled as "dangerous," meaning they will be under a number of restrictions under a new city ordinance.

Under the designation, the dogs now must be licensed with the city, neutered or spayed, micro-chipped and have rabies shots. They also have to be kept behind a locked 6-foot high fence and muzzled if they are on public property. In addition, their owner, Silvia Lugo, must have $100,000 in liability insurance.

Lugo was also fined a total of $2,200 at a hearing for several offenses related to the pit bulls.

The punishment stems from a June 24 incident in which Schock was walking his German shepherd near Lugo's home.
Sgt. Eddie Carr with the Mobile Police Department's ponies, including Little Joe (center) on August 10, 2010. Little Joe was killed by dogs Tuesday morning.

MOBILE, Ala. -- A pack of dogs that attacked two miniature ponies owned by the Mobile Police Department were multiple mixed-breeds, not pit bulls, police said this afternoon.

An officer on patrol heard yelping and found the ponies, Woggie and Little Joe, being attacked by at least six dogs at about 1:50 a.m. Tuesday morning just outside the department's barn at 1251 Virginia Street, according to police spokesman Christopher Levy.

The ponies were taken to a Highland Animal Hospital in Daphne, where they later died, according to Sgt. Eddie Carr, who heads the department's Mounted Unit.

Police caught three of the dogs, which were later euthanized, and set traps to catch the others.

The responding officer originally described the dogs as pit bulls, and police initially reported the incident as a pit bull attack. However, a veterinarian who euthanized the dogs later said they were "very aggressive" mixed-breeds, according to Levy.

For much of the past year, aggressive dogs have killed at least eight cats kept around the stables, Carr said. Officers who work in the Mounted Unit have tried to keep the dogs away in the past.

Police believe that someone owns the dogs, and the owners could face criminal charges. Investigators were looking into tips this afternoon, Levy said.

Many in the department's Mounted Unit had become attached to the ponies, which stood no taller than 28 inches, Carr said.

"We considered them officers, because they became our friends," Carr said.

Little Joe, a 2-year-old named for Deputy Chief Joe Kennedy, and Woggie, a 3-year-old, were purchased for a minimal price about two years ago, Carr said. They ate only about 50-pounds of feed a month, and cost little to maintain.

Police had plans to use the ponies to help pull children with disabilities through a Mardi Gras parade next year, Carr added.

"We took good care of them," Carr said. "They were here for the public -- the kids especially. We were proud of these two fellas."

Note: This video was shot weeks before the attack. (Video can be accessed at news link)

Convicted dog abuser Juan Daniels was denied parole Tuesday morning in Montgomery. He is currently serving a 9-year sentence for beating and burning his former pet pit bull Louis Vuitton nearly three years ago.

Daniels has served two years in prison since his conviction after a case that gained national attention.

WSFA 12 Montgomery reported earlier today that thousands of people across the world signed petitions to influence a parole denial for Daniels.

"This is not a victimless crime," Dee Hartley, Louis' current owner, told WFSA. "Just because he's a dog, that makes no difference. This dog has suffered tremendously. There are going to be other animals that suffer at his hand. If he's done this to a dog, he's doing to do this again, and he's going to do this to a human."

Montgomery County District Attorney Ellen Brooks told WSFA this was the first time in her long career she had seen an animal attend a parole hearing.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports that nearly 30 people attended the hearing, including Louis Vuitton.

Brooks also told the paper Daniels has received nine citations in prison for bad behavior since learning the date of his parole hearing.

The dog is now 7-years-old and is said to be healthy aside from some minor skin problems.

Police and animal control officers are still hunting for a pitbull taken from the Hastings pound in a brazen raid last week.

Two men broke into the pound on Thursday night and cut the dog from its cage. The unregistered pitbull had been impounded after attacking a labrador on Heretaunga St on Tuesday.

Today a spokeswoman for Hastings District Council said they still hadn't located the dog.

No information was passed to police or through the Crimestoppers phoneline, despite a public appeal.

It was the second time a dog had been broken out of the pound this year. Security was beefed up following the first incident and after increases in fines for impounded dogs.

Council staff said the two men broke through the roof of the Henderson Rd pound at 11.30pm on Thursday, setting off a security alarm and causing $2100 damage. They climbed down into a poodle's cage and cut their way out with boltcutters before finding and freeing the pitbull.

A council dog control officer responded to the alarm, but the offenders had already fled.

The pound was temporarily secured after the breakout and permanent repairs are under way today.

Jefferson County authorities initially converged on a home Friday afternoon as part of a drug investigation, but ended up finding an animal house at Sherman Bell’s home according to Sheriff Fred Abdalla.

"I've seen a lot, but this is one of the worst, the inside of that house certainly isn’t livable, I can tell you that," said Abdalla.

Humane officers counted more than 100 pit bulls at the home along County Road 23 near Bloomingdale. In addition they reported finding chickens, snakes wild boars and pet cockroaches. Abdalla said it appears many of the animals were neglected because waters bowls throughout the property for the animals were empty.

Abdalla said his biggest fear when he arrived at the scene was that the animals were being used in some sort of organized fighting. Bell said that isn’t the case. “I raise pit bulls, but they are not for fighting. That's why I'm so broke. If I sold them for fighting I'd have money." Bell went onto say that chickens are not used for fighting either.

Bell is in the Jefferson County Justice Center facing a slew of charges. His animals are being cared for by Humane officers, they will likely leave the animals on the property and care for them there, because there are just so many.

In additional to the large animal find the Jefferson County Drug Task Force reported finding 30 guns, sawed off shotguns, 80 marijuana plants and 20 grams of raw opium.
