Ok anyone who knows me, knows i have the biggest heart for animals and love nature. Tonight when i was on the last leg of my walk me n my dad noticed a female malard frantically quacking next to a storm drain. the dogs keyed in real quick on it too geting very excited. I asked my dad to hold both boys (no easy task) while i investigated the situation. I walked towards her and she didnt budge and inch. I heard cheeps coming from the storm drain and realized imediatly that there was baby ducks down there i was hoping they werent injured from the fall as me n my dad ran back to the house. We retrieved a 5 gallon bucket a ratchet kit and a flash light as we raced back to the storm drain. We popped off the cover and my dad lowered me down(there was no ladder). i crawled around in the storm drain trying to corral baby ducks and hand them to my dad. i found 6 and went in 50 feet either direction trying to find more on my hands and knees. I assume i got them all because i heard no more cheeping. My dad guided the momma towards a canal near our house and the safety of a field. I have never seen a momma duick run so fast following my dad. I DIDNT KNOW DUCKS COULD SPRINT!!! well the momma and her babies are safe for tonight, i worry about them tomorrow. We often see many families of ducks on our walks but this one was new and i had never seen it before. we often see the families start at 6+ and dwindle to 2 big babies by the end. this journey wil be rough since i have a connection now with these little guys. keep the ducks in your thoughts i know i will be thinking of them.

thanks for reading. i worry about silly stuff.

AW! Very sweet. Sounds like being handled by human hands did nothing to keep this mama from her babies (as it will sometimes do).

Good job rescuing those lil guys!

I know that CAN happen. I really had no choice though. It usualy happens if 1 is handled and not the rest because of the smells and such. I think the stench of the strom drain is enough to keep my smell secondary LOL

Good to hear the babies are ok. When it comes to birds, i would rather eat it than save it, but these are babies...have to save em.
