Hey there, so I didn't know if I should post this here or under general so sorry if it is in the wrong spot.
Anyways, today we rescued a 14 week old female chihuahua. The lady was gonna take her to the pound because she said she couldn't be potty trained. My mother in law owns 2 chihuahua's, one that is 5 months and 1 that is 2 yrs old. Niether are potty trained.
I always here that chihuahua's are harder than your typical dog to potty train and I know that there are a few ppl in here that also own chihuahuas, so I am just asking y'alls opinions and what y'all have done to potty train your chihuahua. I have those pee pads but she doesn't understand them yet. Thanks. :)

Yikes....I had one a while back and I tried everything that I could to get him potty trained ...even had a doggie door for him ...and we would use it....but not to go out a potty...Ill tell ya I ended up loosing my patience with him and I took him to my aunt that works at an animal hospital and told her to home him cause I couldn't do it...He was extremely hard to potty train and always jumping up on the kitchen counter and knocking over the trash so that him and the other 4 dogs could shred it...I wish you the best of luck girly and hopefully someone will be able to help you out ;)....

I think small dogs are trouble. My pug still poops in the breezeway when we arent home on occassion, I think it's their tiny brains lol.

Lol, yah, I have never owned a small dog, I mean when I was a kid my parents did, but the dogs always used the restroom in the house. Grrrr.... Well she doesn't act like your typical chihuahua, not yappy, loves the 2 girls, loves being around the chickens, horses, goats, and bigger dogs. She hasn't used the restroom in the house just yet cuz I have been outside with her all day taking care of animals!
But they said she does have a big problem with it, so I just didn't know if small dog ppl deal with it since it is tiny anyways, or if they know a secret. I don't care if it is tiny or not, I don't want pee and poo in my new house, lol.

I have two Chihuahuas and yes..they are very ahrd to potty train because their bladders are so tiny lol. They simply can't hold it for very long. Luckily I can just leave my back door open during the day and they just spend most of the day outside anyway but every now and then there will still be an accident when I come home.
BUT puppy pads are the way to go for small dogs, if they don't have the ability to go outside when they want. :) Most chihuahuas/small dog owners just train their dogs to puppy pads

Awesome, thanks so much christy. I have the puppy pads so I will just leave a couple in my room tonight, she also has a little pet taxi she supposedly sleeps in. Like you, during the day I always leave my patio door open so she will always have access to the outside. Even if she doesn't potty train that well, I don't plan on giving the gorgeous girl up. Hopefully tomorrow I will have pictures of her up. She is the identiccal coloring as the black/rust dobies and min pins. Very cute. I have never liked chi's before but I think my mind is about to change, lol.
