A dogs bedding is important. It must be changed frequently depending on what kind of bedding you use.
For outdoor dog houses or yards straw can be used. Wheat straw is a favorite among dog owners because of its insulative properties and its durablity. Coastal Bermuda works but many dogs are tempted to eat it, your dogs stools will end up resembling rope. Dogs can sleep in all kinds of grasses and leaves and be quite happy. Many of the break down quickly and make more of a mess than a bed, specifically johnson and sudan grass. If using grasses or straws for your bedding make sure to rid of it of burs, thistles, foxtails, insects, spiders, scorpions, etc. If you leave your bedding in your dog house too long it could become home to other unwanted pests. Wood chips make an excellent bedding but can cause problems if not changed frequently such as skin problems, eye irritation, and fungus growing on the chips. For puppies newspaper or even better, shredded newspaper, makes great bedding materials. It is sterile and cheap.

For indoor dogs in and out of the crate there are several more options for bedding. You might not want to scatter straw or grass all over your living room ;) . For inside of dogs crates you can use anything that is easily washable such as blankets, towels, carpet squares, and the easily available dog beds at your local pet store.

A word on dog beds. Dog beds are usually $10-$50 but can cost upwards of $300. Being that we own pit bulls on this site the most durable and long lasting beds are worth our money and attention. Beds filled with polyester start out extremely fluffy and comfortbale after about a week (wash time) they seem to mat down and lose there comfort. After a quick wash they seem to perk right up for another day or two but never get there fluff back. Choosing a dog bed with a removable slip cover is advisable so you can wash it easily, for puppies a water resistant slip cover is nice or simply putting the bed inside a large trash bag before putting the slip cover on works fine. Dogs are curious and mouth and naturally want to explore there zippers and how they work. Finding a dog bed with a covered zipper and one that has no "zipper handle" on it is convenient you can always use a paper clip to open up and get inside. All things considered the best beds i have found are memory foam dog beds. They encompass all the qualities i like and best of all are guarenteed indestructable. If you dogs chews one of these. They will send you a new one free of charge, and YES you do keep to keep the old one ;) .

hope this was helpful... any other ideas for bedding please contribute. A dogs rest is just as important to its health as his water, food, and work.

I've heard of people using cedar chips as a medium for the floor of runs for puppys and dogs so I included it in my report on beddings. However I wouldn't use them myself because of the draw backs.

They are insulative, absorbent, and smell good. They work well inside bedding in conjunction with beads or polyester. Letting a dog lay directly on cedar chips can cause irritation and splinters in the eyes, paws and elsewhere.Old wood chips are notorious for collecting molds fungi and insects.

I hope that helped if you find more pros n cons on cedar chips let me know.

Wash your blankets, that's puppys for ya... Letting a dog sleep on hard surfaces can cause sores, dry spots and calouses.

At the rate that he goes in...i cant. I have replaced 3 this week. I only do my laundry once in two weeks. He will have to wait. And i don't put him in the crate a lot, so it shouldn't matter.

you might want to do a seperate special load for the blankets sooner and more often...you dont want to keep soiled bedding around it can become a health issue

oh okay i was thinking soiled blankets just sitting in the hamper..at least you are getting the yuck off em. Have you tried using at least newspaper for him to lay on when he has yucky blankets?

i cleaned out the plastic bottom of his crate, and put him on there for a while. I tried newspapers, he chews them..or tears them apart. Doing laundry in two days. So he can stay there for now.

Try shredded newspaper. Got a shredder at the office? Bring a garbage bag and shred some newspaper. Believe it or notnewspaper is rather sterile and clean to eat it's notgonna kill your puppy. Makesanexcellent bedding and czar will be so excitedwith fresh shredded paper he will sh!t ... Which brings youback to square one LOL;)

For my dogs in their crates I use nice thick horse blankets, they are usually cheaper than a dog bed but way harder to tear up. Depending on what you buy, some are really nice and fluffy but extremely sturdy against teeth. Horse blankets are made very durable and for long last. No fluffy stuff to chew out of it, and not really the kind of fabric a dog can just shread to pieces. When we clean ours, we just use the power washer and it gets all the tough soil out of it. Are dogs are mainly all outside dogs and these blankets last a lifetime is seems. Even my chewer can't seem to chew past the corner because of how durable they are.

Depending on your size of crate, a horse blanket usually fits right in and looks nice. My dogs just LOVE them.

Tell me about it, lead ropes are great leashes, lol, a hell of alot stronger, lol. Also the fly spray is great in the summer to use around the kennels and crates outside, does not hurt the dog. Mane and Tail Shampoo does wonders for a dog. Lol, sorry, I just use alot of my horse stuff for my dogs, lol.
