7281 TEXTILE ROAD,YPSILANTI, Mich. -- A family is homeless and their prized show dog is dead after a house fire in Ypsilanti.

Twelve pit bull show dogs were rescued from the fire that broke out at a home on the 7200 block of Textile Road near Hitchman Road, at about 9:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters said the dogs' kennels were kept in the garage with straw on the floor and an electric heater for warmth.

Fire inspectors said the fire ignited when an extension cord shorted and started the straw on fire. The flames quickly spread through the home.

Homeowner, Alisa Baker said she rushed home when she got the call that her house was on fire.

"I actually ran into the house. Firemen were there when I got there, and I ran into the house trying to get my dogs," said Baker.

The other 12 pit bulls were rescued from the fire. A few dogs suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation.

Baker said rescued dogs are recovering, but she said she gets sad when she thinks about the pit bull she lost.

"I am really going to miss him. He looked like a hound dog because he had very, very long ears, so we had to get his ears cut for the dog shows."

Two of Baker's dogs, a brother and a sister, won ribbons last year for best male and female.

Baker said she gave two of the dogs to her coworkers and the Huron Valley Humane Society is now temporally holding the 10 other dogs.

The dogs are not for adoption. The humane shelter said it would help the family out as they struggle to find a place to live by temporarily providing shelter for the dogs.

Baker said the family was already down on their luck and had recently foreclosed on their home.

"They told me I can't move back in cause of water damage and so forth," said Baker. The damage to the home is estimated at $100,000.

The Red Cross has provided them a hotel until Friday, but after that, Baker said she doesn’t know where to go.

"I need to find a place with a barn and a place for me and my children, 3 boys, and a girl, and I need help," she said.
