Dog-fighting Summertown, GA
Friday, Jan 8, 2010

According to Sheriff Tyson Stephens, Emanuel County Investigators, working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigations and East Central Georgia Drug Task Force, served a search warrant at 69 Brown Hall Road near Summertown in northern Emanuel County. One arrest was made for 14 counts of Cruelty to Animals.

Norred & Associates Inc., an Atlanta-based private security firm, initiated the investigation as a result of confidential leads reported to a dog fighting tips hotline sponsored by Norred. A Coordinated investigation between Norred, Emanuel County Sheriffs’ Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and East Central Georgia Drug Task Force uncovered evidence of dogs possibly being raised for the purpose of fighting. The dogs recovered were mainly pit bull dogs.

“By giving us solid tips, the citizens of Georgia are demonstrating that they are serious about stopping the abuse and use of dogs for what these criminals call sport,” says Norred Investigator, Chuck Simmons. “Norred & Associates, in turn, will continue to put this information to work by helping law enforcement eliminate dog fighting and other animal cruelty, wherever we find it.”

Sheriff Stephens stated that this operation would not have been a success without the help of the Atlanta Humane Society working with the afore-mentioned law enforcement agencies, Sheriff Stephens further stated that there were 14 dogs seized and they are being transported to the Atlanta Humane Society for evaluation and treatment.

Arrested and charged was DEREK WAYNE JUKES (35) of 69 Brown Hall Rd. Summertown, Jukes was charged with CRUELTY TO ANIMALS 14 COUNTS. At this time the investigation IS Continuing and further charges may be pending. Jukes is currently being held in the Emanuel County Jail.

If you have any information regarding this matter, please call the Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office at 478-237-7526 or the Norred toll-free animal cruelty hotline: 1-877-215-2250 to report Suspected animal abuse cases anonymously.

Case Updates

Derek Jukes is behind bars and faces 14 counts of animal cruelty. Emanuel County investigators tell us jukes was arrested after a tip lead them to a suspected dog-fighting ring at his house. The tip was received by Norred Associates a private security firm based out of Atlanta. They have a partnership with the Atlanta Humane Society who decided to team up with GBI and Emanuel County Sheriffs Office. When they got to the home they found 14 dogs in bad condition.

Miguel Abi-Hassan, Atlanta Humane Society: “We have a lot of dogs injured in front chest area, around the face, fore limbs. Have a lot of injured ears.”

Authorities say most of the dogs were pit bulls and so far all evidence points to dogfighting.

Alan Watson., GBI Agent: “In any case like this it’s surprising to see the conditions that these animals are in especially with the temperatures that we are having at this time. The animals of course need food, water and shelter.”

Fraendy Clervaud, reporting: “Emanuel County investigators tell us this is not the first time a suspected dogfighting ring was uncovered in the area. Authorities tell us this past summer about 93 dogs were uncovered in Dublin Georgia. Authorities tell us information from that investigation helped them to uncover this current case.”

In that prior case, William Panick was arrested but later released on a $50,000 bond. Fast forward to January, and investigators are trying to piece together clues on how and why was this suspected dog-fighting ring setup. Humane society workers tell us all these dogs will be placed into the hands of a veterinarian to determine the dog’s future because of their injuries.

Miguel Abi-Hassan: “While we were removing the dogs off the property we did encounter quite a bit of dog aggression and again have quite a bit of scarring.”

should almost be over now. from what i have read only a small percentage has held up to be dog fighting charges. they already came through N. Ga in 07,08 and are in S. Ga now, to many people dont know how to mind their own business and not tell their own business and just like you have BYB you BackYardFighters who dont know what is going on and started running their yaps thinking they are somebody. I believe the constitution says somewhere you can do what you want with your property, these dogs can be looked as family members or as property, so you can do what you want with these dogs but there are laws now and when broken you have to pay. im no saint i have had my run ins with laws and popo, but i did the crime so i had to do the time. i learned dont brake laws you wont be in trouble. but yes it is ridiculous that outsiders cant mind their own business and think everybody that owns pitbulls is matching them, i go through a lot with my kids friends and their parents. i live in Bartow Co, Ga. and the AC here is cool, they always call me asking me to adopt strays so they dont have to be euthanized, and they told me whenever i need them they will be there to back me up, so far so good.
just want to make it clear i am in no way saying any of these people being gone in on are dog fighters, i have seen a lot of the so called evidence and there is none. just people need to be careful what they say nowadays, you could just be talking about some of the great dogs in the past and to the wrong person you are assumed to be a dog fighter, sucks we cant talk about them, but this is the BS it is coming down to now. and just cause somebody might have done it before 76' or even after and got out and still owns dogs does not mean they are dog fighters. i know there has to be a statue of limitations somewhere that they cant touch you for past activities.

Don’t be fooled or let your guard down ppits. Norred & Associates are still making their rounds in and around Georgia. I got a call from a friend this morning who lives about 20 miles over the South Carolina/Georgia State line from (in S.C.) Savanna around 5:45 AM telling me his local Sherriff’s department, County Animal Control, The S.C. State Attorney’s Office, The HSUS, and Norred & Associates were (“raiding”) rummaging through everything he owned from the inside of his house to both of his outdoor detached buildings. He only has 5 dogs that are very well hidden from the ROC (rock), dead end road that he lives on (at the end on over 65 acres). His dogs are on concrete with and axels through the middle and enclosed all the way around with 12 gauge chain link fence, even over the top. They have pitched (shingles) roofs on top which from an aerial view would look just like picnic shelters. Each kennel is 50X50 and his dogs are kept in emaculate condition. The dog lot is more than 5 acres behind his house and VERY well hidden by trees and brush. He even has the dog lot fenced in with 12’ chain link because of wild dogs, hogs, foxes, raccoons, possums, and thieves. He has a video set up to die for. It makes mine look antiquated, which it probably is. Anyways… I think Norred & Associates, the HSUS and everyone else involved this morning have bitten off more than they can chew this time. You see, my friend is a S.C. Licensed Veterinarian and is even on contract with the county for their K-9 dog’s and has been for last 6 years ever since the county started their K-9 program. His wife is a very prominent Attorney licensed in both South Carolina and Georgia. Long story short, Norred & Associates and the HSUS weren’t allowed on the property and EVERTHING was filmed. Their local Sherriff kept apologizing and apologizing and apologizing and the Director of the local Animal Control looks straight in to the camera several times and says that she’s never seen any dogs must less his American Pit Bull Terriers in such emaculate condition with such clean and way more than adequate living space. When the last car pulled out of their driveway around 3:00 PM this afternoon, no dogs had been taken, or citation(s) issued. Monday morning charges will be filed, but not against my friends. Everyone keep your fingers crossed. If my friends win this one it just might end Norred & Associates better known to the fraternity as the domestic terrorist who our government has given a free pass to terrorize the owners of our breed and commit genocide against them. Nothing personal and no offence ppits, I know we’re both on the same page here brother and the preservation of the breed is our main objective but, “this” (Norred & Associates) is a long ways from being over. As long as there’s a paycheck to be made by dry snitching & lying, Norred & Associates Inc. will be there to collect theirs.

No most of the time they don't have a warrant and yes they can get away with it. Georgia has alaw that is similar to the law that is sitting down in the senate here in Alabama. It allows them to go on your property and search and seize with just probable cause ( suspesion). Its a b.s. law and its being passed right under most peoples noses. See most people dont even realize that they law is going to affect them. Its supose to be a law to help law inforcement to stop criminal activity before it becomes a problem and to help to stop dogfightng and drug dealers and manufacters in the long run its a law that will affect peoples rights and privacy. Including the rights of dog owners. It will be giving them power that they should not have and unless people realize what it is it will try to be passed everywhere because people think the law is just to stop criminals will really its saying hey come raid my house cause I look suspisitious. Welcome people to the modern laws to help take away your rights. I know so far that the a law like this was passed in GA. There is one trying to be passed here in AL and I have heard that it will also try to be passed in TN, NC and MS. My advice to everyone is to keep an eye on your state senate and house and look up all things being decussed at every meeting or it may pass without you not even knowing about it. I found mine to late. I missed that meeting I just pray it didnt pass. If you want to know were to find these things you can usually find them online. Most states have this information on a state website. Keep up with politics people it may save you some trouble in the long run.

They have to have a Warrant but, the warrant must be very specific in where and what they can search. Without divulging to much of my friends information… of which I’m sure will be all over the news unless the local Law (a VERY small town sheriff) sweeps it under the rug because of all the embarrassment. Not the local Sheriff’s department but the S.C. State Attorney General’s Office and the local County Animal Control Officer’s went way beyond the scope of the Warrant. Even after being verbally told in front of the County Sheriff that they were “Trespassing”, and then having the local County Sheriff himself put them (Norred & Associates Inc. and the HSUS) on a “NO TRESPASSING NOTICE”, they… members of both Norred & Associates and the HSUS still continued to enter the property (which is all on film), my friends wife after an hour and with the help of two of her friends, one who is an Attorney, the other a local Circuit Court (General Sessions) Judge finally had the Sheriff’s department remove Norred & Associates and the HSUS not only off the property but their Street/Road because technically its not deeded to the State and therefore not Legally considered a public street or right-of-way, in actuality its Private Property. Because of his love of animals (all animals) my friend has only charged $100 labor plus medical supplies to the County for his services which include 24 hour a day emergency - drive to on site care - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, Not any longer. He said his contract is up in May. After that they’re on they’re on. Now honestly board… please jump in and give me your input to pass on… do you blame him?

.
.

.
P.S.
Oh plus I found out earlier tonight that two of the horses he has in his pasture belong to the County and that he doesn’t even charge them board, feed or farrier charges! He has beautiful horses and my wife’s Aunt has sold him several horses. That’s actually how we met almost 20 years ago. His wife barrel races and is serious about it too. These are highly respected people in their community and work places. Now, regardless their going to have this stigma and dark cloud hanging over their head because of buttholes like this. THESE DOMESTIC TERRORIST MUST BE STOPPED!

Sad but true SFK, most people don’t know the Law or their Constitutional Rights and the local Law, PeTa, the HSUS, Norrad & Associates Inc. take advantage of that and are slowly eradicating the American Pit Bull Terrier off the face of this planet. However, not to be rude or argumentative, they (in most cases, however there are exceptions) do have to have a warrant to enter your property without your permission. That’s’ your Constitutional Right‘s, Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment. Myself (I'mnot a Lawyer) and several thousand constitutional lawyers can and would argue a dozen or more others but those are just the two very basic “Amendments” that our founding fathers instilled the principles of unreasonable search and seizures in and the rights’ of the people to be free from the King or Queen‘s (Government‘s) (tyranny) unreasonable entry on to their property without just cause.

Laura most Judges will issue a Warrant on probable cause. In fact probable cause in South Carolina is all that is required to get a warrant issued.

See most people don’t even realize that they law is going to affect them. Its suppose to be a law to help law enforcement to stop criminal activity before it becomes a problem and to help to stop dog fighting and drug dealers and manufactures in the long run its a law that will affect peoples rights and privacy. Including the rights of dog owners. It will be giving them power that they should not have and unless people realize what it is it will try to be passed everywhere because people think the law is just to stop criminals will really its saying hey come raid my house cause I look suppositious. AMEN Laura. Nothing I can add to that and most everyone else is either hiding or has their head buried in the sand or wait…. Just doesn’t really give a POOP! Sad to say, I know… but if we’re all honest with ourselves here and each other, our breed is doomed. Preserve what you can folks, tighten the circle and hang up the old CLOSED sign in the shop window so to speak. History is all we have left and now they’re even taking that from us too.

i know it is not over, but i know my rights and i did what i did to turn the tables on them, you see they came to our show last year, this year they show up they will be escorted out in sheriff's cars. i got criminal trespass report on them, and since i have this, local sheriff's office was asked if simmons or n/a showed up at show if i could turn this into stalking and harrasment charges and they said yes. plus they have no right to show up there, b/c we are leasing facility and can refuse anybody admittance. i am a quick thinker and i know a lot of the laws and all this went through my head when i first confronted him. so you better believe my plan will be put into motion if they show up. i know it is not over yet, but will be soon

roe when they first show up they are sneaking around on your yard trying to get evidence, then go and try to present evidence for warrant, then come back and take. me for all those people that hate AC, it worked in my favor to be in tight with local AC,

yes PPits we are doing the same thing. Had the vet come out and do all shots and inspect the yard. Now we are calling the sheriffs office and animal control out to the yard. They said they would be glad to to do so and the sheriff said that he will make a report and if anyone comes on my yard that from a private company and/or Hsus with out contacting him first that they will arrest them for tresspassing.

the thing is Jack is the law that they are trying to pass here will really mess with people on what their rights are. It is a law that will allow law inforcement notice I said "law enforcement" not Hsus to come on your property and search and seize and raid before the warrant is actually issued if they "feel" they have the right probable cause to make an arrest at that precise time. I have read it and it said right on there FOR Animal cruelty, Dogfighting, and Drugs. I was thinking great so I did what I knew would stop any thoughts of them doing it. my husband Called the Sheiffs office and invited them to my yard. This is a small town and I just so happen to know the sheiff and animal control and they know me well to keep anybody like Norred and Hsus out of it we invited our Sheiff and Animal control on the yard to document the yard before Norred and Hsus can even stick their noses into it. I have nothing to hide and I live in a county were the animal laws are laid back and there is law against bsl and there is no laws on how many animals you can own as long as they are being taking care of. I took steps to protect myself. I worry about others who have not done their research on their rights and the laws that are being passed in this state. They may not know that their are steps to protect themselves and they may not know about the law allowing them to raid before the warrant is issued if law inforcement "feels" they have the evidence to make the bust.

As a dog lover with a special place in my heart for the pitbull breed I can understand the motivation behind the hunt for dogfighters. Dogfighting has been reported to be prevalent in the Milwaukee area, and I suspect it ranges further out than that. I had the creepy experience of someone approaching one of my pups at a gas station after she snarled at him from inside the car. (She loves people and this is unusual behavior, so her dog-sense must have kicked in.) He looked her over carefully through the window before I was able to get around the gas pump and call her to the other side of the car. Afterwards, he sat in his car and stared at us while I finished fulling the gas tank and then followed us half-way across town. These are the kinds of people that the public wants investigated and put away. Unfortunately, the breed and good honest people are being harassed in the process. I believe that the vast majority of honest, humane owners and breeders need to be much more proactive in reporting real dogfighting activities, as well as breeders that sell to dogfighters. Otherwise there is a perception that if we're not supporting the fight against the dogfighting then we must be for it. As a result, more and more decent, honest people, such as Jack's friend will be harassed and the breed will eventually be extinct.

We did the same thing, took every single dog we have to the vet last Saturday and not only did all the yearlies at once but made sure that she documented body condition, absence of parasites, lack of wounds etc. AC has been to our place many times because I work closely with horse rescue, so I have that covered too.

Packmom-the problem is that they aren't really concerned with whether or not you are a dog fighter, it is about eradicating the breed. It is only the first step in their plan. Just the fact that they now have the entire country thinking that "creepy" dogfighters are lurking at gas stations to steal your puppies is proof that their agenda is working. I would be more inclined to think that your creepy stalker was after you than your puppy. I bet it was scary for you and I am not trying to play it down but I just don't believe that dog fighters lurk around trying to steal dogs. If that were the case there would be alot less pitiful dogs sitting in the car at Walmart for hours on end.

I'm sorry to hear about your friends Jack. Alot of negative attention has been getting lobbed at the HSUS n similar groups lately. I believe this will just cause them to get desperate n try n drum up more publicity by raiding folks. They slipped up once and they will slip up again and it's cases like this that will help our breed. It's sad that the owners have to go through this but I consider it trial by fire. If the APBT and it's owners can survive these attacks and persecution then I think they will be able to overcome any obstacle history puts in front of them!

Let's raise our glasses to the APBT and it's owner, may you fight back from the bottom and show your gameness when it matters most! Here's to the APBT and it's owners, never say die.

It sounds as though you're experiencing something quite different there than we are here. People take all kinds of other dogs to WM, but I've only seen one or two pitbulls waiting in a car in the 10 years I've lived here even though the breed is so popular that we frequently see people walking their pitbulls all over town. The creepy guy at the gas station was asking all about my dog, and was way too impressed with her unusual behavior toward him. He was also clearly not from the area. It's the only experience I've ever had like that, but it left an impression.
