Coyote attacks woman, and later pit bull in Greenburgh

GREENBURGH — A coyote attacked a woman, bitting her on the arm and leg today, and later went after a pit bull in the area of Travis Hill Park, police said.

At about 3:15 p.m., a 56-year-old woman walking along the trails of the woods around Old Tarrytown Road and Wyndover Road, roughly 500 feet west of the Bronx River Parkway, was bitten and scratched by the light tan coyote, officials said. She was taken to White Plains Hospital where she was in stable condition, officials said.

Greenburgh police began searching for the coyote with the help of a Westchester County helicopter, spotting the animal but unable to catch it, officials said. Later a resident living on Kent Road reported that his pit bull had been attacked by the same coyote, officials said.

Sgt. Nick Reckson said the dog was injured but is alive.

It's unclear whether the coyote had rabies as the animal remains on the loose, Reckson said.

Residents are advised to report sightings of the coyote and to stay away from it. Pets also should be kept inside and not allowed to run loose outdoors. Garbage should be secured so as to not attract the coyote and other wildlife.

Puzzling, a loan coyote, often pack animals. Alot of folks hunt coyotes with pit bulls. Ive considered it. Maverick has an especially deep aggression towards coyotes.

Probably rabid, I'm sure she isn't taking a chance. The shots aren't bad, just very pricey. I'm speaking from experience. $400 out of pocket ten years ago and about a thousand two years ago when a friend was bitten. This was after the insurance picked up the rest. All were raccoon bites no coyotes. They were all provoked bites, that is the coon's were minding their business and we were messy with them.
There have been more and more coyotes moving in our area as fox pens have brought them in to chase and they escape. Are the pits released on the coyotes or are they capable of running them down? I would love to hear more. It takes fast hounds and a bunch of them to stretch one out. Chris Mercer

From what I hear is, 1 small pit is released on a pack, the pit occupies the pack as you pick most of them off and the dog can finish off the what it can handle.

didnt know they used pits on coyotes. i know they use greyhounds to catch them, cause they are faster and better air. i have coyotes around me, but havent seen one in yard yet, prolly wont either with 20 dogs, closest was about 100 yards away.
dont sound right coyote attacking alone, i have come acrossed them one on one in woods when they was bedded down, and never had a problem they always ran from me, unless i was ready for them. agree had to be rabid

I am wondering about distemper, it is kinda early for rabies. Distemper is more common and would cause strange behavior as well.

Lots of coyotes here but we never have problems much, occasionally they will get ahold of one of the barn cats but Mabel keeps em out of the yard. lol

I have been through the rabies series (rabid dog that came in to the vet clinic when I was working there) and they are painful and very expensive.

Well we have had rabies at a epedemic level for about 10 years now. Usually this is when we have attacks on pets and people in their yards by raccoons, foxes and so far no coyotes or bears.
Maybe I'm loosing feeling, I didn't find the shots so bad and neither did my friend. Yes, they were expensive but mostly for the insurance company. Chris Mercer

Yeah I don't really foresee a lone rogue coyote taking on a APBT and coming out unscathed.

I seen some in cali they were kinda small and not very healthy looking besides the fact that pits are used to hunt/catch them.

Dog was prolly a cur.

Hmmm, that is odd. We have had an increase of them here and they are being found throughout the urban areas too. No reports of attacks on humans, though a yorkie was killed by one.

Just yesterday I listened to an expert discuss the coyotes, the attacks on humans thus far have been by rabid coyotes. Though some are now becoming less fearful because some people have been feeding them....

I have seen their tracks here in the snow all around my barn, in the pasture and all along the fence line....no tracks have been near my dog yard or the house....

Cheers
