View Full Version : What made you choose a pitbull?

Why did you pick a pit bull to have as your dog? Was it looks, character, drive, reputation?

Me i picked APBT because I've all ways loved them. All my friends used to have them. And i knew once i was in a position to have my own dog it would be a pitbull.

They are awesome with kids. Fun to play, and work with. There drive, omg there is amazing. The never give up no matter what attitude does tons even out side of the pit.

There history I cant think of any other breed that has a history like ours. The pit puppies are the cutest puppies i have ever seen. And a adult pit looks so distinguished. Unlike many other ppl because of growing up around them i have never been afraid of pits, they are wonder full with ppl. And i know this.

They are very smart compared to most dogs. Every pit has his own personality. There not all the same like most small breed dogs. I think personality comes from intelligence. And can be trained.

And finally honestly i have never seen a dog that cares as much about there owners as a APBT!

How about you?

Its the ultimate dog.
My uncle (RIP) was an old school dogman. Had a beat up retired old dog named Stubs, just an amazing dog. Was my introduction to the breed when I was a kid. Never looked back.

APBT owners are their own breed of people. :)

I wanted a dog with a good balance of strength, stamina, agility and temperament with little or no HA. And pit bulls seemed to be a good choice.

I was introduced to the breed while I was working in a grooming shop. We had an APBT that came in once a week for a bath and toenail clipping. His name was Lou. He was the sweetest dog I worked with the entire time I worked in the grooming shop. Thats when I decided that when I was able to get a dog of my own that it was going to be a APBT. ;)

Hmm the real reasons...I started looking at so many puppies trying to figure out what I wanted to adopt. The puppies that caught my eye were the pitbulls. I didn't want a huge dog (used to have a rottie who was an absolute doll), and well because everyone around me didn't want me to get a "mean ferocious" dog. That was when I started researching and joined gopitbull to learn everything about these dogs. I am the type of person who does something to prove to others that they are wrong. I have a great puppy with tonnes of personality, and energy. Despite the fact that my boyfriend who helped me get the dog and who I thought was going to be my life long partner just went basically awol, I am still going to give this puppy the family it deserves we just may be one short from now on lol.

It was the desperate look they gave me from in their kennels, knowing their demise was coming any minute. Their ability to trust me no matter how bad they were treated by the people before me. and the lack of responsible people willing to make an informative choice wheather to let them live or not. and their need for just 1 compassionate person to step up and speak for them. Call me crazy but they chose me!

paris (kumho momma) proved me to be a fool...claimed to be a pitbull hater i still liked the bitches owner so i stayed around a bit and she grew on me..QUICK then when she was amazing with my kids i just knew i had to get her pup and kumho waddled his fat @ss to me and it was true love from then on and after owning that weiner dog for like a week I REFUSE To take anything thats not bulldog

Well when I met my husband he had a 10 month old pit mix (3/4 pit, 1/4 husky) named Brutus. Brutus is now 9 years old and has been one of the most amazing dogs I have ever known. Everyone who meets him adores him, even if they were scared of pits before. When we bought our home 2 years ago the natural choice for a second dog was another pit. Loki is every bit the dog we thought he could be, and then some.

well,mine was pure accident.
im a photographer, and was in texas doing a website photoshoot.i had gone to this kennel to shoot the mans dogs, and in one of the stalls was a momma dog in the corner that had just had babies two days prior.well, the runt of the litter was in the other corner cold, and looking as though he would die at any moment.me being the big hearted person i am,asked what he was going to do with him,and he told me that he was fixing to kill him because he was the runt, and because the mom didnt want it.my heart sank!how can you be so cruel??i know that the mom usually rejects the ones that she sences sick or whatever, but for this man to not even give him a chance at life was beyond anything i could wrap my brain around!i asked him if i could take him since he was going to die anyway, and he gave him to me.so,ive raised "moose" from a bottle since he was 2 days old,and now is 3 months old.he is THE best dog.he is my son.i love him sooo much words cannot even describe.
i never saw myself owning a bully breed, but now that i see their devotion and the:pupkisses: unyielding love they give,i could not see my life without one.

Awsome story... there is no way that I would have ever been able to let that happen either. I would have done the same thing. It makes me so happy to hear that you took him and gave him a chance at life. ;)

I have always loved bully breeds, and my first dog was an EB. We decided we liked the goofy personality, but wanted a more active dog, Thrall the EB can't go on long walks, when we ride bikes he has to ride in a dog trailer etc. So we tossed around a bunch of bully breeds, and our friend has a little pit mix, and and he is a super dog and won our hearts. My hubby also has a friend with bull terrier, and he's a great dog as well, but Pit bull won on the end. Our friends pit put on a show at a BBQ a few years ago. Everyone was hanging out, drinking some beers, etc, and he drags this old taxidermy thing out of the garage, like a fox or linx or something, just something that you buy at a garage sale, or have laying around from when your great great grandma died, and you were like 12 and thought man that's cool. Well he pulled it to the middle of the yard, and started humping it like crazy like it was his girlfriend or something lol. We still laugh about the looks on people's faces. WHo wouldn't want a natural born comedian like that lol.

Plus, it keeps the neighbor kids out of my yard.

i know i'm late on this thread but i had no f*cking clue what a real bulldog was when i first got into them. i was fooled by the designer trend like so many others. i actually already had a good bulldog i scooped up for a buck fifty but was told he was too skinny by a friend that had bullies. naturally i liked the "look" and i sought out another dog and got a bully. it didn't take long and i was trying to change the bully game by adding drive and wind. i did a few bybings ...lol and said f*ck it, it's not worth the work to undo what had already been done. i got a gamebred dog and was immediately impressed. nothing compared to the heart and spirit...not to mention other qualities i won't speak of and i fell in love with the true bulldog. i gave away a few dogs, did a few co-owns with dogs i thought i wanted to have access to and i'm still in the process of cleaning out the yard and starting over. once you go game...nothing else is the same.

I've always loved pit bulls. I've always thought of them as an American hero in a sense and have been raised around them. Many of my friends and parents friends had wonderful APBT's when I was younger. I have a lot for a couple other breeds and do own them and will continue to in the future but I have passion for pit bulls that will never die.

well. i had a chiuhahua as my first dog. was actually a good dog for ME, but when i moved out my parents house to go on my own, my parents turned him into a devil dog that hates motorcycles.....anywho....i moved in with what is now my soon to be brother in law. he had a female jocko pit. her name was Shay. WONDERFUL DOG. she is gone now (rip?) one day she just vanished. she totally reconfigured what i had been "taught" about the breed through ignorant others. I bought pike thinking that R.E. was a APBT for the simple fact that pikes parents were not "overdone" i couldnt see the difference....i was uneducated....but to ME i don't think i could have made a better choice.
heres the girl that blew my mind on how faithful, wonderful, intelligent a dog can be. shay is the full brindle bitch and that's her offspring to a oeb, his name is big boi.

I have an abundance of children, old people, and babies in the nieghborhood... i felt i should have something that could solve this problem and eat them all. Boy was i let down! My dogs are WAAAY to friendly towards people and are constantly getting comliments on behavior!! Man was i dissapointed. I have to eat all the babies and attack the old people all by my lonesome! The children i just push down and dont let them get back up.

As a child I grew up with pitbulls. They were our family dogs. Very well behaved, smart and loyal, each one of them. I miss them so much and I STILL think about them everyday. It was sort of a no-brainer for me to get a pitbull.

I wanted an atheletic, muscular, clean, smart dog that I could trust. This is what lead me to the APBT. However, it was a long time after I had decided thats what I wanted that I actually got Harlem. There were none of them around here, none of them in the shelters for a long time. Then Harlem was in the SPCA in a city 2 hours from me, I went to look with my Sibe at the time, for a meet and greet. We didnt get within 30 feet of him without him snarling, snapping, hair up, absolutely red-zone intent on shredding her . So I left without him. The next day I went back because I still really felt drawn to him, and talked the shelter into letting me take him, he was due to be put down at the end of that day, and the worker I talked to on the second day thought that will alot of work and management, he might come around. She was right, and a year and a half after getting him we rescued Lily. Since then aquired Halle, and then Tyson. My dogs have changed many peoples minds, due to the amount of training, attention, willingness, quickness, and drive they have. I cant see having anything else.

I fell in love with a dog man. LOL! Hmmm, that was 13 years ago and I have never looked back, all the shows, all the dogs, all the hard work is so worth it. I love these dogs and after meeting my first I was never the same again.

The dogs changed my life and made me a better person because we spend alot of time advocating for the breed as well as playing and pulling and showing.

what got me loving the breed was actually one little white cow spotted male named Bugsy. he had those crystal eyes and the sweetest pup I ever met! I was offered him and begged my mother but she said NO pitbulls (I was 8 at the time) thats when I fell for the breed. My aunt had a few and I loved them all and I got my first when I was 16. a chocolate girl named Monroe (she was a beautiful girl) and from then on I wouldnt own another breed. I was hell bent on keeping the american heart in my household and I will never change my views on them. I am lucky to be one of the few who see these dogs as much more than what the media stamped on them.

I didn't search out for a pit.I wasn't even looking for a dog at the time.My family and I were over at a family members house for an Easter party 3 years ago.One of my husbands cousins is a byb of pits.He had a few litters drop at one time and was telling my husband that he had 2 pups that he couldn't get rid of.So he was planning on just taking them out in the woods and shooting them cause he couldn't afford to keep them.
We told him to not do it yet,let us come by and take a look at them.We fell in love with Pretty Girl as soon as we saw her.So he gave her to us and we found somebody else to take the other pup.
Haven't looked back since then. She is what has made me fall in love with this breed. Her love, commitment and dedication.

My first dog that my mom ex husband got for us was a pit and she stole my heart, I have loved pits ever since. When I moved to where I am now the lady at town hall told us that pits where banned, so I got a dog from the pound. I know Happy has issues but he has never ever snapped at my kids like that dog did, so I got rid of that dog to some one that didn't have kids and I thank God I piked up Happy off the streets.

I was raised with a pitbull growning up. My husband and I got married and wanted to start a family with our kids and to have a dog!We got our own pitbull 2 1/2 yrs ago. Why we choose a pitbull is cuz they are such loving and a good friend to have. My dog is my friend. Thats all i want my dogs to be my friend and loving pet that I can hang @ with. We love our female so much we got an other pitbull. O can't forget the jack russel. My dogs are awsome and I am so glad that they are mine!!!!!!

My ex brought them into my life. I fell in love with his dog Lady, and there was a rule in my family that I couldn't have a dog until I finished college. During this relationship I had decided that a "pit bull" was for me, although I knew very little about them...After I was done with school my ex got me a pup from his friends out of Alabama. My Sydney. She truly made me decide that this was the breed for me. She is everything I wanted in a dog, and overall my best friend. We have been through alot together in our 3 short years, and together we have learned and grown so much!

So as much as I dislike my ex, there will always be one thing that I will be forever grateful for...

You do have to watch them very closely cause they will turn on you in a heart beat, especially if there is a litter of pups involved.

One of my friends back in elementary school his dad had a kennel and they invited me over one day to see his dogs I fell in love with the breed that day they offered to give me one but my mom said no she said I was too young for a Pit Bull at the time I kinda agree since I was only in the 3rd grade lol. Now im older I got one and can understand what it takes to take care of something that takes responsibility. Now I would like to start my own kennel one day.

Ever since I was a kid if you were to tell me to draw a picture of a dog a pitbull would come out (at least somewhat cause I can't draw). My family never had a pit bull or any bully breed dog and they have always had lots of dogs my whole life.

Pit bulls are just beautiful animals and very fun to play with, and above all they have lots of LOYALTY which is very important in a dog.

I also love pits because of their bad reputation, I have always felt it was greatly undeserved and driven by a media dying to make an interesting story and a general public that is to dumb or gullible to realize they shouldn't just believe everything they hear.

When i has 5 years old my older brother had 2 Game bred Pits back in 1985. I have no clue how they were bred. Princess was a small 35 black brindle bitch, and Butch was a red boy with a black mask. They had pups, and my brother sold them then he joined the ARMY and sold Butch and Princess. I was a pissed off 5 year old, and missed them dearly but that was the end of Pitbulls for me until as of recent. I moved down to Tampa when I was 19 from WV and I wanted a Pitbull but my apartment complex had a ban on the breed, so I wanted a feisty dog with a big attitude so I got a Jack Russell and got into competing with them at terrier trials, and doing everything they are all about. Then when I bought my house my buddy had Rocco (a Boyle's bred dog) and I was always a fan of Rocco and when he bred him to his bitch Spazzy Jazzy a Vetzels bred dog he offered me a pick of litter and I took Tug a little seal boy with white snout, and some white on his leg. He has been a very good dog, easy to train, and at 10 months old he is everything I could have asked for.

Loyalty is NUMBER 1. I had a pit/mix (yeah I know not quite the same).. but she looked like a full blooded pit. Was my best friend. On my back all the time. Had my back all day every day never a doubt. She loved me to death... sadly died at a young age.... major major RIP.... I still go see her when I visit my parents. Made a flower bed etc... That dog was amazing.. (pit/lab) mix. My parents always owned labs. (they kind of annoyed me although usually great with kids). The pain i dealt with losing maddie. I said never getting another dog. 1 month later.. that all changed. Got me a 9 week old full blooded pit this time who is full of energy but doing very well. I plan to train him to be an amazingly smart dog and hopefully eventually test him out to be a service dog for myself if all goes well.. He's on his 2nd day of puppy obedience class tomorrow.(with a very reputable trainer.. trained all over the world basically). All I can say is I've never met dogs that were so loyal and caring and loving. My family only knows the horror stories and have never really self educated themselves or been around the breed to know any different so I thank the media on that one. But I don't care I know who these dogs really are and want to be. And for me.. they are the only dog I would ever want.
