SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea defied world powers and carried out an underground test Monday of a nuclear bomb Russian officials said was comparable to those that obliterated Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The incident drew condemnation from Washington to Beijing and set the communist regime up for a showdown with the United Nations.

The U.N. Security Council was meeting later Monday in New York to discuss what President Barack Obama called Pyongyang's "blatant defiance" of resolutions banning the regime from developing weapons of mass destruction. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown condemned the test as a "danger to the world." Russia's Foreign Ministry called it "a serious blow to international efforts" to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.

French officials said they would push for new sanctions, and even traditional Pyongyang ally China said it was "resolutely opposed" to the test, which Russian officials estimated yielded a powerful 10- to 20-kiloton blast — enough to flatten a city and far more than North Korea managed in a 2006 atomic test.

Raising the stakes
Pyongyang's unprecedented defiance raises the stakes in the mounting standoff over its nuclear program.

Last month, Pyongyang launched a rocket despite international calls for restraint, abandoned international nuclear negotiations, restarted its nuclear plants and warned it would carry out the atomic and long-range missile tests.

"We're heading for a full-blown crisis with the North," said Peter Beck, a Korean affairs expert who teaches at American University in Washington.

The rise in tensions comes amid speculation about who will succeed North Korea's authoritarian leader, 67-year-old Kim Jong Il, who is believed to have suffered a stroke last August.

Kim, who inherited the leadership from his father in 1994 and rules the nation of 24 million with an iron fist, has three sons but has not publicly named a successor.

Though desperately poor, North Korea increasingly has turned inward. With last month's controversial rocket launch and Monday's nuclear test, Kim clearly wants to show its people that the nation remains strong, analysts said.

"The fact that North Korea is undertaking this nuclear test amid great economic and political turmoil might be a sign that North Korea is trying to escape from some kind of internal difficulty," former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev said during a visit to Seoul.

Trying to drum up support
Beck predicted Pyongyang would parade the nuclear test before the North Korean people to drum up support for Kim and his regime.

"Kim Jong Il is trying to demonstrate his virility and that they are a power to be reckoned with," he said.

Monday's atomic test was conducted shortly before 10 a.m. about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of the northern city of Kilju, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Alexander Drobyshevsky said, speaking on state-run Rossiya television.

Two hours later, Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency declared that the regime had "successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of measures to bolster its nuclear deterrent for self-defense."

The U.S. Geological Survey registered seismic activity in northeastern North Korea at 9:54 a.m. (0054 GMT), which it initially identified as a 4.7-magnitude earthquake.

North Korea also test-fired three short-range missiles from a nearby launchpad, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported, citing unnamed sources.

This rules out pretty much any military operation against NK. Even if we wanted to deal with NK militarily, SK and Japan would definitely say no, since its them who will get nuked. Diplomacy is pretty much the only option now, kinda sucky considering NK has never been a reliable diplomatic partner. I guess this would guarantee that the US military would maintain a strong military presence in the region for a looong time.

if we dont do anything now and let their program develope and mature any longer their may not be a whole lot we can do later. we need to do something about this while they are running tests.....this doesnt necessarily mean they have nukes....but they will if we dont stop them now.

They already pretty much have nukes, they have been testing for sometime now, the only thing they don't have a effective delivery system. The problem is we really don't know what the hell they are up to, at least Saddam let UN inspectors in, there is absolutely no one on the ground to verify anything. So we cant assume they don't have working nukes, because no one wants to take that chance, all it takes is one nuke to get through, considering how US and SK forces are concentrated around the border it would be disastrous.

Also an another issue is SK does not want to take action, we cant go to war till SK gives the ok, and considering they have a lot to lose, i don't blame them for not pushing for any military action.

everyone in the world has alot to lose. this is a problem of not only the asian south east but the entire world. we need to take action before its too late......mark my words....action not reaction

Ive been in the Army for a while now. And one thing i know is you dont want fanatics to have a nuke. They dont care if they die they think its great. Imagian a suicide bomber with a atom bomb. Sad day for humanity.

Them idiots they are threatining us with nukes. See our imaige has gotten soft becouse of our political wars. But they should know if they nuke one of our ships I believe all the poilital shit is going out the window. We would have to flaten them.

Leon

Thats the scary part, they don't mind being flattened. They know they cant win a war against the US and SK combined, but they sure can bloody our noses. They are banking on the fact that people in the west don't have the stomach for war..and they are right.

yeah well rusia is in on it to. they are on our side. NK has china as an ally but i doubt china wants to take us on. 1 we buy so much from them. 2 they cant get there ppl here so there numbers dont mean shit. At least not on our homefront.

China wont be anywhere near NK on this. Last time was different. China has everything to loose and absolutely nothing to gain. But once NK has the nuke, they don't need any allies, who's gonna attack a nuclear armed nation? If they attack first then its different, and with our forces spread out with Iraq and Afghanistan, it will be tough fight.

fanatics would we are a nuke armed nation and they take pop shots at us all the time.

We are different, we are too pampered, soft and spoiled. People need to understand that if they want action against NK a nuclear armed nation, they have to be prepared for a nuke on US soil. People understood this in the cold war era, but these days, people are too naive and are too pampered by the govt into thinking we are invincible and always safe.

I mean people where shocked by 911, i wasn't shocked, i was horrified yes, but surprised no. We have been fighting these people for decades, its only a matter of time before they got in one against us. I don't understand why its soo hard for the general population to understand, If you pick a fight, you have to be prepared to get your nose bloodied, if not don't pick fights.

yes but the only problem is NK does not have the means to get a nuke over here in any conventianal way. And if we would of spent the amount of money on home land defence as we have in iraq we would be virtually in penitrable.

The usual dick waving by the North Koreans. They don't even have a real nuke, or a effective way to launch them. I say if they want to stay ass backwards and barbaric, let them, but if they start anything, nothing short of complete annihilation will do.
