Well we don't all have to be breeders to know what we like in a breeding... We like the best dogs possible!
So what's the best way to achieve this? I'd like your opinions...
Is it sticking within the bloodline?
Is it breeding for the traits of 1 specific dog?
Is it breeding the best to the best... No matter what venue they excel
in?
These are just general questions and are not an outline for a format for you to follow in your response. I'd like all creative answers, I'd like to know all of your opinions on this subject.... Thanks for participating!!

I think if you are chasing down specific traits then you MUST stay within a line. You may outcross once in a while to a dog that has something you are looking for but when you outcross you delve into a gene pool that you are not totally familiar with. If you are a breeder who has been consistently line breeding A LINE then you know what traits are there and what to expect.
Yes you breed best to best and you cull hard. Simply saying, your breed only the best dogs exhibiting desired traits. From that litter you only breed the ones that exemplify those traits. And you repeat and repeat and repeat. Sometimes you may inbreed but ONLY once and then you had best know what you are doing. INBREEDING hightens all traits, good and bad!!
You can breed for 1 specific trait, however you may get that trait but it will come with several others from the parents. You will never nail down just one trait. For example. Switch has a NEVER QUIT attitude. He will work at home if asked to. He is all out, never say die kind of dog. Bailey is the same way, the little girl just pulls but she hates to work. She does not get excited she just walks the weight down the track and never quits. She has won nationals two years in a row but I cant get her excited when it gets down to the wire. I really have to stay with her when she works at home. So in the breeding we just did between Switch and Bailey Im looking for the pups to have a "no quit drive" and also get the willingness to work.
If i was looking for a competition dog and not a pet, i would definitely stay within a line, because like what Andy said, you know what traits to expect. And when your serious about competition you should know exactly what traits you want in your dog, and the best way to find the dog with expected traits is one that has been line bred for generations.

I've always pretty much thought that line breeding was the ONLY way to go. I understand outcrosses are needed sometimes cause I was taught that in line breeding the lines can be too tight and as OFK said the traits are heightened good or bad. And just my opinion but a LINE starts with just one dog. So in line breeding aren't some people looking for the traits that dog had? I know that sometimes a breeder is even looking for the traits that were passed on from that dog. I believe that breeding the best to the best is the way to go but I also firmly believe that the secret is staying in the line.
