The Pit Bull: A Case of Mistaken Identity
The canine known as the pit bull is in serious danger throughout the world. Media propaganda and lack of education perpetuate the threat posed to these animals. Pit bull is a legal term, these days, used to describe several dogs with similar looks. It is often applied to alleged dangerous dogs. The average person doesn’t actually know what a pit bull is, as defined by reputable breed registries and dog enthusiasts. The average person thinks the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Bully (not to be confused with the American Bulldog) are one in the same, when in fact, they are quite different. A lot of this confusion arises from lack of education and from cultural expectations of what a pit bull looks like. They are two different breeds with different looks, history, temperaments, and working abilities.
The American Bully (AB) and American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) are dramatically different to the trained eye. Known for its sinewy body, the APBT embodies muscular and trim. The AB looks like the average person’s stereotypical image of the pit bull. Thick and powerful looking with an enormous head, it is visibly intimidating. There is a comparable size difference between the two breeds. The APBT is a medium sized dog when pure bred. Weighing anywhere between 30 and 60 pounds and being no more than 20 inches tall, it is not a large dog by any means. The AB on the other hand is usually a large dog tipping the scales at 50 to 130 pounds, depending on
Page 2
lineage. In general, AB’s are prone to unusual color combinations, whereas the APBT is often more solid colored. The muzzle is slightly longer and narrow on the APBT and shorter and thicker on the AB. The visual differences between these two closely related dogs can be traced back to the history of the breeding practices associated with them.
The history of these two magnificent breeds of dog goes back to the American Pit Bull Terrier. Dog fighting used to be a popular and accepted sport. The powerful nature of the bulldog was crossbred with the fierce drive of the terrier to create the ultimate fighting dog. Bred only for the purpose of fighting, these dogs didn’t bite handlers, fought through pain, fought to kill, and most importantly, they fought to please their masters. They thrived and so did the sport of dog fighting. Time caught up with the politically incorrect sport and it was outlawed. They have continued to be bred with their fighting instincts diverted to other various activities. The bulldog and terrier combination make for a lean dog with a muscular frame. The muzzle takes on characteristics of both breeds with a large mouth but longer face. About ten generations ago, APBT enthusiasts started crossing their dogs with different breeds. The Bull Mastiff, American Bulldog, and other powerful breeds were introduced into line breeding programs with champion APBT’s to create a new kind of pit bull. These dogs were bred for size and a visual aesthetic rather than drive and gameness. The new breed was dubbed the American Bully. The size varied wildly with the AB because of the inconsistency in the dogs being used for the breeding. The temperament was also affected by the crossing of others breeds with the APBT.
The main component of the APBT temperament is dog aggression (DA). The secondary elements are an eagerness to please, loyalty, and the enjoyment of working. That mixture of traits
Page 3
was the goal of the original breeding project. They retained the drive of the terrier and loyalty of the bulldog. The AB has had DA bred out of it for the most part. A terrific family dog, the AB is content to lie on the couch or romp around in the yard chasing a ball. The APBT is typically a tireless animal that takes the most dedicated of owners to effectively manage its chaotic energy levels. The intelligence level seems slightly higher with the APBT, but really that is more indicative of the energy level and willingness to learn. High energy levels combined with the enthusiasm for pleasing their master makes for an incredible working ability.
Working ability used to mainly consist of fighting for the APBT and baiting for the AB. With the enactment of certain laws and the convenience of modern tools, a decline in conventional work for dogs has happened. Dog handlers have sidestepped those things by finding different ways of working dogs. Weight pulling, obedience, and agility have replaced the former jobs of baiting and fighting. The APBT engages in every sort of sport available to them. They are tenacious in their pursuit of self satisfaction via work. The high energy level along with the versatile, flexible structure of their bodies makes them ideal for the whole range of dog sporting. The AB of today is typically not the best working dog. Their roots have a strong working nature, but that asset has been bred out of it for the most part. The body is larger and prone to health issues including exhaustion and heavy breathing. AB’s do participate in weight pulling. They have drive, but not enough to rabidly compete. The distinction between the two breeds is boldly apparent when comparing working ability.

Page 4
The pit bull stands at a crossroads these days. Not just the APBT or AB, but every breed entailed under the pit bull umbrella term. It is important, now more than ever, to understand the difference in these breeds. Knowing those differences can allow the owner to adjust his or her training program to meet the needs of that particular dog. Creating a healthy, well balanced dog further ensures that headlines won’t be made by pit bulls. What one breed categorized as pit bull does affects every dog recognized as a pit bull by the legal community. It has been said that the pit bull can be your best friend or your worst nightmare. Education into the breed is the best insurance to having a best friend rather than worst nightmare.

Jeremy,
You have created an interesting and well-written essay. I have often wondered about which were which, as the broad shoulders, for me, make the dogs look very similar. I often find the coloring of these dogs intimidating. Make sense?
Nicely done!
